My approach to my practice is methodical and playful, if you could imagine the two meeting. I love the artistry in the perfection of small details, spending hours on getting something just right, and doing that in every corner of the piece until it’s complete. I find that if you focus on the small stuff, it leads to discovering new and exciting ways to create, and it leads you to what’s next.
The style of my work takes inspiration from greats like Bodmin-Turner and Hepworth. I love architecture and photography, and find them huge inspirations in my practice. There is a traditional feel to my work while remaining distinctive to my own style. My favourite part is imagining the idea, sitting with it, and figuring out how I can structurally execute it.
My attitude towards color is opposed to mine of clay; I’m far more structured and stay within my set parameters. I choose clays I can leave unglazed, clays that are strong enough on their own, like rich buff tones or clays with heavy crank or grog. When I do work with color, it’s usually clear glaze or light washes of beige or brown tones. I find that glaze can take away from the hours of sculpting that go into one of my pieces. Glaze fills wrinkles and details that I’d prefer untouched.
